ISO 9001 sets out the criteria for a quality management system.
The ISO 9000 family of standards, including ISO 9001, are all based on seven quality management principles. A “principle” may be defined as a basic belief, theory, or rule having a major influence on how a person or an organization operates. The seven quality management principles (QMP) include:
QMP 1 – Customer focus:
QMP 2 – Leadership
QMP 3 – Engagement of people
QMP 4 – Process approach
QMP 5 – Improvement
QMP 6 – Evidence-based decision making
QMP 7 – Relationship management
The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has created an excellent QMP guide. Check out the ISO QMP guidelines at https://goo.gl/ooJckq.
For each QMP, this publication provides:
- Defining statement: Describes the principle
• Rationale: Explains why the principle is important to/for the organization
• Key benefits: Examples of expected benefits related to the principle
• Actions you can take: How performance can be improved when applying the principle
